And Neon Runs Through It

I grew up in Las Vegas when Neon was everywhere and lit up the night.  Except for Fremont Street most of it is gone.

Fremont Street in the late 1940s.

Fremont Street in late 1950s.

Fremont Street in the early 1970s.

Still standing and still lit-up

Still standing

The Strip in the 1960s (don't you wish it still looked like this?)

I am a researcher (family historian) looking for information regarding the history of the Navada Bar which was owned by Sam Stearns and purchased by Art Schellang (member of our family - whose name is most always spelled wrong) in October 1941. Located at 115 North First Street. Also information regarding the "Las Vegas Club" where Art Schellang was General Manager and co-owner in 1951 and according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal (Oct 7, 1951, p10:2) Art had brought the first "one arm bandits" into Las Vegas at the Las Vegas Club. Art Schellang and Tutor Scherer headed a group who bought the Nevada Club in 1954. Art and his wife Ruth resided in Las Vegas on Bond Road (Tropicana Blvd) and by 1954 in a new home in Paradise Valley, NV. He is reported to have had interest in several other Las Vegas clubs. Art died in 1955. His death was deemed a suicide after the deputy coroner Glenn "Bud" Bodell, and the medical examiner Dr. Byron Howell presented their findings following an inquest. However, after pouring over the newspaper articles recounting the incident, I feel the evidence to support a suicide is questionable at best. His widow Ruth moved back to Long Beach, CA about 1957 where she later died of complications resulting from Parkinson's in 1976. Art was previously married and had children by his first wife: Arthur A. Schellang of Bishop, CA and Robert Schellang of Van Nuys, CA, a daughter Katherine Szmilski of Downey, CA and a sister Anna Anderson of Las Vegas, NV and Los Angeles, CA. He had a brother Harry Schellang who died in Las Vegas in 1930 from TB which he contracted during service in WWI - Harry and Art's mother was a Mrs. Hall and resided in Huntington Park, CA in 1930 and in 1955. Art was 60 years old when he died in 1955. Any information regarding these casino's, their history and any information regarding the individuals mentioned would be appreciated. The partners involved at various times with Art were Ted Griss owner of the Warm Springs Ranch (held a lawsuit over the owners of the Las Vegas Club in 1953 disputing his 5% share); L. B. "Tutor" Scherer, and Michael Shapiro (along with at least 3 others I cannot find names for).

Mark,
Please contact me on Facebook. I am researching Tutor Scherer, and have researched Art Schellang enough to know that his sister married another casino pioneer, Chuck Addison. I would like to share information with you.
Thanks,
Patrick

To Debbie Ransom and Mark ?
Charles Addison's wife, Ann was sister of Art Schellang (older). Art is grandfather (via Katherine F Schellang) to Linda Beauchamp, mission Viejo CA (who is my best friend), so Debbie and Linda are both great nieces to Charles Addison. Don't know how Mark fits into this. Linda has family stories and a picture of Art and his look-a-like 1-armed bandit. Her cousin, Joann Ronci, grandaughter of Charles, recently passed away. That 60's pick is awesome! I so wish I could spend just one day on the strip when it looked like that! Back when it still had all the neon and a true americana feel. Oh well, my first trip was in 94' and it still had a lot of that look then. Now not even the same place!

Are any of you still looking for info on Arthur Schellang?? My friend, His grand daughter is still interested in connecting with common relatives. Art Schellang the son, and her Uncle Art, used to own the Beacon Restaurant in Bishop and was friends of my McNally Clan (of my partner of 21 years Jim McNally) in Bishop CA owners since the '40s of Eastern Sierra Wholesale, Coors distributors and 1st Alcohol Distributing in the Eastern Sierra. Linda and I are connected in other ways besides being friends for 56 years.
Please, Schellang and/or Addison relative searchers, please contact me so I can get you in contact with: LINDA JANE SZMILSKI BEAUCHAMP. My phone: 775-224-1183.

Because of all the comments above, I can't believe no one is interested in connecting with common relatives, connected thru Art Schellang and Charles Addison. My ph. and email ae still the same if you would like Stories by Linda before she forgets them all.
