Riviera announces bankruptcy plan
She was once one of the grand dames of the Las Vegas Strip. When she was built, she was the first high-rise on the Strip. For many years, Liberace, Dean Martin and other classic Las Vegas entertainers graced the stage of the showroom.
But in recent times, the Riviera lost a lot of her glamour and in trying to stay alive resorted to just barely hanging on.
We hope the grand dames luck is changing. Steve Green at the Las Vegas Sun reports about that the bankruptcy plan includes improvements and possibly new gaming equipment.
The Riviera Las Vegas hotel-casino would be spruced up and receive new gaming equipment under its parent company's bankruptcy reorganization plan.
Unable to service its approximately $291 million in debt and liabilities, Riviera Holdings Corp. filed for Chapter 11 reorganization in Las Vegas on July 12.
Investors led by longtime hotel and gaming industry executive Barry Sternlicht of Starwood Capital Group have acquired some of the debt and intend to lead the company out of bankruptcy.
Besides its 2,075-room Las Vegas property, the company owns the Riviera Black Hawk casino in Colorado.

Last of the Las Vegas Memories
This series has been very popular so I thought we would end the series on an up note:
The pineapple fountain that once graced the front of the Tropicana
Snow day, December 2008
The El Rancho Vegas with its famous pool
Downtown 1955
A slogan that brought thousands for a visit
The original House of Lords rendering, Sahara Hotel
The El Morocco (formerly the Bank of Las Vegas) and Jack Dennison's Copper Cart

The Union Plaza: A Look Back to the Beginning
We've had a couple of emails from people asking about the Union Plaza and wanting to see more pictures about the Train Depot, Union Park and what was there before the Union Plaza was built.
Thanks to our good friend, Dennis McBride, at the Nevada State Museum, Las Vegas we can do just that.
This is an aerial shot of Union Park with the Train Depot sitting in the background with the train tracks behind the Depot. In the foreground, you get a glimpse of the Las Vegas Club neon sign and roof line and a small glimpse of the Golden Gate neon sign on the left.
This is the Train Depot looking east. Union Park is front with the Las Vegas Club across the street. To the left of the Depot is part of the Cashman Dealership.
This is looking just south of Union Park and the Train Depot. In the foreground is the Golden Gate. Across Main Street is the Greyhound Bus Terminal and Von Tobel Lumber.
Rendering of the Union Plaza Hotel. Though the rendering credits Stanley J. How and Associates in Omaha, Nebraska, the local firm of Walter Zick and Harris Sharp were involved as well.
Construction begins on the Union Plaza. The Las Vegas Club and the Golden Gate are in the foreground. The Train Depot has yet to be torn down.
More coming!!!!!

A smattering of photos of Mid-Century Modern things we love
Our dedicated readers will remember our good friend, Allen Sandquist who goes by the name of RoadsidePictures on Flickr.
A few years back, he broke preservationists hearts by moving to Idaho. But, because photography is in his heart, he has been preserving via his camera places in Northern Nevada and in southern Idaho.
Some of his photos have been featured in a new book, "Quintessential Boise: An Architectural Journey"
Here are some photos that I really love and I hope you do, too:
Nifty Mid-Century Modern vintqage bowl:
Pole Lamp (we had a similar one in my childhood home in Charleston Heights)
Covey's Little America near Boise
Cal Neva Lodge in Lake Tahoe
Holiday Motel in Elko, NV
Club Silver Dollar in Elko, NV
El Rancho in Wells, NV
The Star Bar and Dining Room, Elko, NV
These cow pokes used to adorn the sign on the beloved but gone Mapes Hotel in Reno. Today the preside over the Folklore Center in Elko!
Sands Motor Inn in Reno, NV looks like an homage to the famous Sands sign in Las Vegas!
As much as we miss him in Las Vegas, we thank him for letting us show of some of his recent work and congratulate him on his success in Boise!
