Candlelight Wedding Chapel restored!

The Candlelight Wedding Chapel on the Las Vegas Strip

From the Las Vegas Sun:

It survived a tricky journey across town, required more than $250,000 in renovation, including a new steeple, scavenged furnishings and electrical rewiring.

But when you’re a 1966 wedding chapel — old by Las Vegas standards — and you have a few stories to tell, somebody’s bound to love you.

That’s pretty much how it unfolded for the Candlelight Wedding Chapel, a quaint, free-standing churchlike structure with steep roof lines that sat four decades on Las Vegas Boulevard.

Originally Little Church of the West Algiers and then All Religions Wedding Chapel, it was the first chapel with an 800 number and limo service. It married so many couples daily that a side door was installed to usher out fresh newlyweds so they wouldn’t bump into wedding parties making their formal procession down the aisle.

When its land was sold to the Fontainebleau project, the chapel sat empty until its former operator, Gordon Gust, scooped it up and gave it to the Clark County Museum.

On Saturday the chapel officially becomes a new exhibit on the museum’s Heritage Street and opens to the public with a party, complete with live music, wedding cake and photo ops for couples who were married at the chapel.

“It’s one of those things you don’t think of as history, but it’s important here,” says Mark Hall-Patton, administrator of the Clark County Museum. “Five percent of all marriages in the United States are held in Clark County. That’s one out of 20 marriages.”

Grants from the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors’ Authority and the Nevada Cultural Affairs Commission paid for the renovation, a project of the county’s 2009 Centennial celebration.

It arrived at the museum in 2007. Renovation began in May.

The chapel is decorated to its latest incarnation (white), rather than its previous red exterior, paneled walls and red carpet. Its original pews and organ are gone and replaced with a piano and benches rescued from the county courthouse, resized and refinished.

Its large neon sign, which was added later, is across town at the Neon Museum.

Hall-Patton says museum staff had its eyes on the chapel for 10 years, identifying it as a building the museum would like to own if it ever became available. The museum is home to Heritage Street, a tree-lined gravel road hidden from Boulder Highway and flanked with rescued historic homes, a railroad depot and a print shop.

Visitors can sit on the wooden rocking chairs on the porch of the Beckley House and tour homes, each decked out to its era, each with its own nooks and crannies. They’re adorned at Christmastime and welcome trick-or-treaters on Halloween. (For Saturday’s party, the Clark County Museum Guild will serve cookies, with recipes specific to each home’s era.)

The railroad depot, taken to the site in 1976, was the first building to arrive. The oldest home is a railroad cottage (circa 1911-1914) awaiting renovation.

The chapel, inspired in design by the Little Church of the West, is its youngest structure. Celebrities married there include Bette Midler, Michael Caine, Whoopi Goldberg and Barry White.

“When we look at a building, we look at it from a standpoint that we could use it to best teach that part of our history,” he says. “In 1931 Nevada liberated both divorces and weddings. Reno got divorces. We became the wedding capital.”

My husband and I travelled from UK and married at the Candlelight Wedding Chapel on the 15th May 1991, and have been back to Vegas many times since then and love the place.

This year, we are returning for our 25th Anniversary, but sad that we can't renew our vows at the Candlelight!

We were married by the Rev. Jim Hamilton, and would love him to carry out our renewal - anyone know where is is these days?

I was married at this chapel February 16, 1991 and I'm so bummed to see that it has been moved from the corner, but glad it is still in existence.

My husband and I were married there January 7, 2000. We will be bringing our children to Vegas on spring break and Candlelight was one of the attractions we wanted to show them. I'm sad it is not in operation but delighted that it is restored and we can still take them to see where their parents were married. Had I not been looking for the address to add to the itinerary, I would not have known it was closed.

We were married on 23rd Nov 2001 by the Rev. Jamie Lynn Firzlaff. We sought out the location of the chapel on our 10th wedding anniversary and managed to get a few pics taken. So happy we got to do that as we live in England and it's not so easy to visit!
My name is Urena Kim. I was married to my husband Tae Song Kim on August 23,1987 at the candlelight wedding chapel. Went back recently looking for the chapel but couldn't find it. Wanted to order some wedding pictures from my wedding that day as they are all missing. Glad to here that the chapel has been restored. Barry White was also married there and so was Patty Duke. I guess they put up pictures of famous couples that were married there. They were on the walls when I was there about to take my vows.

My husband and I were married at the Candlelight chappel on July 4th, 1998. We are still happily married and were hoping and planning to renew our vows there this year. Now it's gone. We are so sad about it. Ok, we can go to the building after it has been moved to another place, sure. But that's not the same.
We will go see it, but maybe renew our vows someplace else. Not at a museum, are we even able renew our vows at a museum?
And maybe we'll just stand where the chappel used to be, and say our vows to each other again, no matter what casino stands there now. I want the old place back. But oh well, things change. We all change. We've made it together these past 18 years so I guess we'll figure it out when we get there.
We love that chappel! And we loved where it was, and so sad about it being gone now.
God bless

My wife and I were married here spontaneously in 2000, during a trip from England. I remember the ceremony with great fondness. and pleased to say we are still together. I was surprised to see that it has recently become a museum in Henderson. probably best place in terms of preservation.

My husband, Rafael, & I were married at the Candlelight Chapel in 2002. We were both in the military & stationed apart as we planned our wedding. When we spoke on the phone to discuss details, we each said we'd found the perfect chapel. Turns out, we were speaking about the same one!! Our ceremony was small, but lovely. We were heartbroken when we returned to Vegas just a couple of years later & realized the chapel had been sold & was no longer functioning as a wedding chapel. How awesome to see it's being restored & will remain a part of Las Vegas history!!

My wife and I were married at the Candlelight back on September 24th 1999, even though some think it was the 25th, and have been married since. We have 3 great kids and plan on going back one way or the other to share the experience with them.

Chris and I were married there in 2003. A year later when we returned it was boarded up. Was wondering if it was our fault. Next time we went something else was going up. We always stayed at the Riviera which was right across the street. Unlike the chapel the Riviera wasn't able to avoid the wrecking ball.
